Day Two: The Successful Arrival
Today we got to explore Santiago for the first time! Upon arrival at the airport, Gerardo, our guide and representative of the Universidad Mayor greeted us with open arms and a shuttle bound to take us to our apartments! We are currently staying at the Bellavista apartments which is about a thirty minute walk from the Universidad Mayor. The apartments are beautiful and include a little kitchen and two (yes that’s right) TWO bathrooms! After settling in for a bit and exploring the area, we ventured out to find some groceries. Santiago is breathtaking, with so many amazing people who are all so unbelievably friendly to our group of confused tourists. Everyone is so helpful all the time, despite our lack of Spanish language knowledge. Roman, one of our students, speaks fluent Spanish and usually acts as our translator. We are SO grateful for her. After our grocery adventure, where we bought so many delicious groceries to make breakfast and lunch in our apartments, some of us went on a hike and the other half lounged by the pool. Before sitting by the pool, I got my first Chilean burrito which was heavenly. It was so amazing to sit by the pool in early March! Finally, though, we all got ourselves ready and went to our first group dinner with Leonor, one of our directors for the Devised Theatre Project, at Chipe Libre. The food was amazing, all coming on hot skillets still sizzling. I had steak and it was the most delicious meal I have ever had. It was so good to see Leo again and we the atmosphere buzzed with excitement about the next few days. The dinner was filled with a lot of love and a lot of laughs. After dinner we all prepared to begin work tomorrow on our piece!
